When we feel blue or at times when our hands need pampering, those salon sessions and manicures will certainly make our day.

Of course, months and years on end we’d love manicures and to paint the nails.

But I know, the frequent visits to a salon to get the manicure done, will be relatively like living beyond your means.

However, It’s not a holy grail for women to follow different types of manicures at home itself. It saves a lot of time and money yet you can get a salon experience.

1. Basic Manicure

Basic manicures are definitely a lit. The process to a basic manicure is super simple and easy to pamper the nails. Such types of manicures are usually fuss-free and the best way to get everything that your hands require. You’ll get a standard nail makeover which involves the steps like prepping nails, soaking, scrubbing, masking hands, and finally painting the nails.

How to do a basic manicure at home

Thing you’ll need:
  • Manicure kit (Buy from here: USA | India)
  • A Sugar scrub
  • A Milk Mask
  • Brush & Moisturiser
  • Nail Paints
Process

Firstly, you need to prep your nails by soaking, trimming, pushing back the cuticles, cutting the excess nails, and shaping them. Then scrub your hands with a mix of ingredients like sugar, olive oil & lemon. After scrubbing, apply a soothing mask over your hands. You can make a mask with honey and milk. Wash off hands and further brush the nails to remove the leftover dirt, grime or oils. Finally, apply a good moisturiser to your hands and paint nails with your desired colours.

2. French Manicure

If you crave for a chic and elegant look nothing beats a classic french manicure. Though you don’t need to play with colours you can get a crescent moon look. However, these days most of the fashion divas are also experimenting with the basic french manicures. They’re taking it to the next level of a french manicure. These types of manicures are also very simple with a colour of beige or pale pink nail polish. You can also experiment with different nail shapes without just sticking to square french manicure.

 

How to do a basic french manicure

Things you’ll need:
  • A bowl of warm water & Towel
  • Basecoat
  • White nail polish
  • Baby pink nail polish
  • Top Coat
Process

Fill up a bowl with warm water and soak your hands for a minute which helps to get rid of oils and dry skin. Once your nails are dry, apply a base coat and let it dry before you move onto the next step. Now, use a white nail polish for your tips. Push the brush where you want the manicure to start and pull it over. With a baby pink nail polish, apply a top coat. Finally, to seal and set your manicure, go over the nails with a transparent nail coat and your done.

3. Reverse French Manicure

The reverse French manicure is quite a quirky and a modern version to the classic french manicure. A reverse French manicure involves with placing a lighter colour to the base of your nails and repainting with a darker colour. These types of manicures don’t necessarily need a salon. You can always go quirky at home.

 

How to do a reverse french manicure?

Things you’ll need:
  • Basecoat
  • A lighter shade nail polish
  • Dark shade nail polish
  • Top coat
Process

Start by applying a thin layer of basecoat. Grab your favourite nail polish and apply a nice, thin layer over your nails. Now, it’s the time to go with the second darker shade colour. Leave a small space from the cuticles and paint your nails instead of going all the way to the nail cuticle area. Thereby leaving a small space for the first colour to show up. To seal the manicure apply a top coat and voila.

4. American Manicure

There’s a subtle difference between American manicure and a french manicure. I guess probably American manicure is an update to the old French manicure. American French manicure is more blended with a natural look and the ends aren’t noticeable. However, the nail shape you get in American manicure is different.

 

How to do an American French manicure

Things you’ll need:
  • Off-white nail polish
  • Light pink or beige nail polish
  • Manicure strips
  • Basecoat
  • Top coat
Process

Begin the process by applying a base coat. After the base coat has dried, paint your nails with a neutral colour. Don’t go for a second coat unless you prefer a more noticeable colour. Then using the manicure strips, paint an off-white coat colour to your tips. Allow this to dry and finish off by applying a top coat.

5. Paraffin-wax Manicure

If you’re having rough and dry hands, paraffin manicure is the best possible way to get rid of them. It’s sure a stress-buster. You’ll need to soak your hands in lukewarm liquid wax. It involves a  therapeutic hand massage with oils. So, who doesn’t want to try such miraculous types of manicures?

 

How to do a Paraffin-wax manicure

Things You’ll need:
  • Manicure mask
  • Paraffin wax (Buy from here: India | USA)
  • Wax Heater ( Buy from here: India | USA)
  • A Brush
  • Paraffin protector (Buy from here: India | USA)
  • Cotton mitten (Buy from here: India | USA)
  • Massage cream
Process

Firstly, apply a manicure mask to your hands. Then place paraffin wax into a wax heater and melt until a liquid consistency is obtained. Apply the warm paraffin wax to your skin. Place your hand into a paraffin protector and cover it up with a cotton mitten. Leave for 15 minutes and then remove the wax. Finish off, by massaging your hands with a good moisturiser in circular strokes.

6. Mirror Manicure

For those who want more bling than metallic nail polish, you can always go for this type of manicure. It usually involves applying a black nail polish as the base coat, placing a clear coat and the adding mirror powder to get the mirrored look.

 

How to do a mirror manicure

Things you’ll need:
  • Black gel polish
  • Gel top coat (Buy from here: USA | India)
  • Chrome powder
  • UV lamp  (Buy from here: USA | India)
  • Applicator
Process

Start off by prepping your nails. Then apply a black gel nail polish to your nails. For a full effect, apply a double coat of black gel nail polish. Cure the gel for a couple of seconds under a UV light so as to dry the nail polish instantly. With an applicator buff on some chrome powder. Then brush away the remaining powder around the nails. Finally, apply a top coat.

7. Acrylic Manicure

Acrylic manicure is the perfect manicure for you if you’re having short nails yet longing for long nails. It uses a powder polymer and a liquid monomer to form a hard artificial layer over your nails. It’s basically a nail extension similar to your original nails. But sadly, sometimes you may not get a perfect nail shape when you do at home. So, it’s better to get the acrylic manicure done at a salon by a professional manicurist. However, giving a try is never wrong.

 

How to do an Acrylic manicure

Things you’ll need:
  • Nail file, cutter or clipper
  • Acrylic nails
  • Acrylic glue (Buy from here: USA | India)
  • Monomer liquid
  • Nail forms
  • Acrylic nail powder
  • Glass bowl, toothpick
  • Brush
  • Topcoat and Nail polish
Process

Start off by prepping your nails and determine the size and fit of the acrylic nail tip. Trim the base of acrylic nails and apply acrylic nails over your nails using a glue. Cut the extra nails, file the base and tips of the acrylic nails. Apply a top coat followed by a nail polish of your choice. And you’re done! Of course, I know it doesn’t seem that easy.

8. Gel Manicure

The interesting thing about gel manicure is that they long last for a great number of days. You can stay cool for a couple of weeks without applying nail polish frequently. That’s because gel manicure involves the use of a special nail polish which is cured under UV light for drying and to have a long-lasting effect.

 

How to do a Gel manicure

Things you’ll need:
  • Nail lamp  (Buy from here: USA | India)
  • Cotton pads
  • Nail polish soak off clips
  • Cuticle remover liquid
  • Manicure kit
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Base & Topcoat
  • Gel nail polish
Process

Start off by prepping the nails and using a dehydrator at the whole nail to extract the moisture. Now, apply a thin layer of the first gel as the base gel. Cure under UV light for 2 minutes. Then Place a nail form over the nails. At the moment, start building the nail extension using a builder. Again cure under UV light for 2 minutes.

Next, apply a cover gel to seal the manicure and again cure for about 2 minutes. You’ve to now apply a french gel by pushing the brush where you want the manicure to start and pull it over. Next, apply a thin layer of building gel over the whole nail. Cure it under UV light for again 2 minutes. Now, file the nail into a perfect shape.

At last, use the top sealer gel and cure under the light for more 4 minutes. Apply cuticle oil and massage it to get a shiny and glossy look.

9. Shellac Manicure

Like gel manicure, shellac is always known for its durability. A blend of both gel manicure and regular nail polish is the shellac manicure. Such types of manicures are a great option if you’re working on busy schedules. Surprisingly, shellac manicure can also reduce the possibility of chipping.

 

How to do a Shellac manicure

Things you’ll need:
  • UV shellac nail light  (Buy from here: USA | India)
  • Shellac colour
  • pH bond
  • Foundation
  • Top coat
  • Rubbing alcohol
Process

Prep your nails and apply a base coat over your nails. Apply a pH bond and cure for 15 seconds under UV light. Then apply a light coat of foundation and again cure hands for more 2-3 minutes. Apply one coat of your favourite colour and cure for 3 minutes. Then again apply a second coat of the same colour and cure for 3 minutes. Finally, apply the top coat and cure for more 3 minutes. Using a cotton ball and rubbing alcohol rub the top of nails. Voila!

10. Hot stone and Oil Manicure

Are your hands tired? Do you feel like your hand need utmost care and pampering? These types of manicures will do the job perfectly by relieving you of all those hand troubles. Similar to basic manicures, in hot stone and oil manicures, you’ll receive a hand massage using stones and therapeutic oils. Hot stones and oils are great for expelling any tension in your hand muscles. It also helps to de-stress or relax after the super tiring day. The blend of natural oils will leave your fingers, cuticles and hands well moisturised and nourished.

 

11. 3D Manicure

Unlike the other types of manicures, a 3D manicure will take your nail game to the next level. You can play with different colours, nail arts, and create a beautiful embellished look with accessories. You can add rhinestones, petals, pearls or whatever that seems blingy and girly.

12. Brazillian Manicure

Brazillian manicure is more focused on the cuticles area and therefore it includes removal and trimming of cuticles. Unlike other types of manicures clipping and trimming are done using a special Brazilian clipper. Later, nail polish is not just applied to the nail like basic manicures. Instead, its also applied on the surrounding skin to ensure the edges are covered. The excess nail polish is then wiped off.
