Why are my Lips Dark and Dry?
On a daily basis, there are many factors which affect your lips making them dark and dry. You need to know what factor is actually affecting your lips before getting into the lip care routine. Some of the common factors could be,
-
Sun’s rays
When you’re overexposed to sun’s harmful UV rays or when you don’t apply a sunscreen lip balm while heading out it can cause major lip issues. For the reason that lips are covered with thin and delicate skin, a little exposure can darken or dry out your lips.
-
Dehydration
Dehydration can be a major issue for your lips getting cracked. Dry skin or dry lips are common symptoms for dehydration. Fill your body with enough water to keep your skin hydrated and healthy. Furthermore, don’t gulp down caffeinated drinks or caffeine if you’re having dark lips.
-
Smoking
This is what you need to completely avoid doing if you’re worried about your dark and dry lips. Nicotine and tar will get transferred into your lips while inhaling the cigarette smoke which leads to prolonged discoloration.
-
Licking or Smacking
The biggest bad habit most of us will have is licking the lips. Every time you lick your lips, saliva is observed into lips which will transfer chemicals. This will breakdown your the proteins and lips on your lip skin by causing excess dehydration, cuts and sometimes your lips will bleed. Therefore, either apply a lip balm or drink water whenever your lips feel dehydrated or when you want to lick your lips.
-
Diet
Your diet plays a vital role not only to keep your body healthy but also to maintain a perfect skin texture. Consume raw veggies, fruits, nuts, healthy fats, and other nutrient-rich or vitamin-rich foods.
-
Using Commercial products
Most of the commercial products we use might not suit our skin type since they’re fabricated with parabens and chemicals. With the urge to get soft or pink lips we try out using many lip balms or conventional lip products which can make your lips worse. Try to read the ingredients before purchasing a lip balm or any lip product. Most importantly, don’t splurge on lip products that contain parabens, artificial fragrances, artificial flavors, petrolatum, and chemicals.

Step 1: Cleanse
The first step to lip care routine is to cleanse your lips in order to remove makeup, wipe off dirt, grime, bacteria, and pollutants away from your lips. Every day when you step out of your house, your skin comes in contact with environmental pollutions, bacteria, dirt, and other factors. Washing your face and lips is the most essential step in skin care regime because it will eliminate and prevent dirt, bacteria and dead skin cells from entering your skin.

Step 2: Scrub
Exfoliating skin is the best way to remove impurities, dead skin, dry and flaky skin. Surprisingly, exfoliation can minimize the dark spots on your lips. It also helps with getting soft, plump, pink lips gradually after exfoliation. Therefore, the lips come out with a beautiful and healthy look.
The best way to exfoliate lips is by using home ingredients which do not cause any harm to your lips and does the job effectively. Here’s the recipe which I tried and it worked out for me to get plump, moist and pink lips over time.
Ingredients:
- Sugar – 1 Tbsp
- Honey – 1 Tbsp
- Castor Oil – 1/2 Tbsp
- Vanilla extract – 1/4 Tsp
How to prepare?
In a small container, take a tablespoon of sugar, honey, a half tablespoon of castor oil and 1/4 Tsp of vanilla extract. Mix all the ingredients until well combined. Apply the mix onto your lips and scrub for a while to exfoliate your lips. Later, wash off and pat dry your lips.
Step 3: Mask
Whether you want plump lips, want to get rid of chapped lips, urge to get pink lips, whatever might be the reason you’ve got a mask for every solution. There are zillion varieties of masks out there in the markets. Each mask is specialized in treating specific lip problems such as dry, chapped, discoloration, and flaky lips. Step 4: Apply Lip balm
The last step to lip care routine is obviously a lip balm. Choose a lip balm that has SPF and which protects your skin from all lip problems. As there are so many conventional products in the market, it’s getting hard to pick one which is fragrance-free, parabens-free and that suits your skin.
In order to soothe and moisturize the dry lips or lighten the dark lips choose lip balms with ingredients like beeswax, natural extracts, natural or essential oils, sugar, and other natural ingredients.
